Originally from South Orange, New Jersey trumpeter Peter Sciaino began playing trumpet at the age of 9. After studying privately with David Larson of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra throughout high school, Sciaino entered Syracuse University. At SU, the young musician was a featured soloist in the university Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, and Jazz Ensemble where he was a student of Daniel Sappochetti and John Laverty as well as a composition student of Joseph Riposo. It was at this time that Sciaino began to pursue composition and arranging and had his first chart written for jazz ensemble, "The Metro", performed by the university's top jazz ensemble.
While in Syracuse, NY Sciaino performed with the Salt City Jazz Collective and co-led his own group, The Sextet. After receiving a Bachelor's of Music degree with Performance Honors from Syracuse, Sciaino returned to his native New Jersey to begin his career as an educator in the public schools. In 1997, he began his tenure at Whippany Park High School where he is still on faculty serving as an instrumental music teacher/brass specialist while directing the WP Jazz Experience, Concert Band, and serves as assistant Marching Band director. In the summer months he is the trumpet and jazz instructor at the Mount Tabor Band School in Parsipanny, NJ. Sciaino has arranged music for all of these ensembles and has had his music performed in Universal Studios Florida, Walt Disney World, the University of Pennsylvania, and Giants Stadium.
In May of 2006 Sciaino completed his graduate studies at New York University where he earned a Masters in Music Performance and Composition in the Jazz Studies department. At NYU, Sciaino studied trumpet with Laurie Frink and composition with Jim McNeely. He has performed at the legendary Blue Note in NYC with the university's Jazz Orchestra featuring Lenny Pickett and has had compositions played by the school's rehearsal ensembles. He has also performed with Saturday Night Live alumnus Joe Piscopo and his Orchestra, as a member of the house band at New York City's Supper Club, as a member of the Barn Theatre Orchestra in Montville, NJ and as the lead trumpeter in the Jersey Swing Orchestra.
Sciaino's most recent projects have consisted of small group works for mixed instrumentation as well as big band/jazz orchestra charts written for educational purposes. Sciaino has recorded his first CD as a leader, Project, made up of the small group compositions which was released independently in June of 2006.
